The word Equity in Oakland holds a great deal of power. From the general strike of 1946 to community groups like the Black Panther Party, Oakland Community Organizations (PICO/OCO), Unity Council, and Intertribal Friendship House, Oakland has deep roots in activism and racial justice. Today, The Town stands tall as a pioneer in the fight for social justice within the cannabis industry. Its equity program granted the very first social equity license to a dispensary, a groundbreaking initiative in ensuring that the communities most harmed by the War on Drugs have a stake in the legal cannabis industry. A dynamic melting pot of cultures, Oakland is one of the country's top five diverse major cities. With almost every ethnic group represented and over 125 languages and dialects spoken, it's no wonder this city champions innovation, growth, and inclusion. In this spirit, the Equity Trade Network, with its roots in Oakland and a commitment to national service, operates a certification program designed to remove obstacles for BIPOC, LGBTQ, and veteran-led cannabis brands, facilitating their access to shelf space in California dispensaries. They aim to promote cannabis operators both from and within communities marginalized by the war on drugs.
