2012 Oakland Running Festival Economic Impact: $3.5 Million

More Than $300,000 Raised for Local Charities

Baltimore, MD April 5th, 2012--The third annual Oakland Running Festival ORF contributed an estimated $3.5 million to the city’s and state’s economy according to a recent study by the Regional Economic Studies Institute RESI, an economic research and consulting firm located at Towson University in Towson, Md. Despite gloomy forecasted weather conditions for race day this year’s event attracted a record 8,211 runners, marking the second consecutive year of at least 10% growth.

The study’s projections are based off of the 1,560 participants 19% of field who live outside of the Bay Area. The 2012 field was also comprised of runners from 38 states and six countries.

Lee Corrigan, President of Corrigan Sports Enterprises and the event’s Executive Director, said: “It’s great to see our vision come to fruition. We truly appreciate our early supporters including the runners who participated and Oakland’s proud citizens who came out to cheer on our runners in the first three years of the festival.”

ORF also generated more than $300,000 for local charities including the Ella Baker Center for Human Rights, Running for a Better Oakland, Oakland Rising, the Child Abuse Listening, Interviewing and Coordination Center, the Asian Pacific Environmental Network, and Team in Training. Close to $800,000 has been raised for charities since the event’s inaugural year.

“From the early feedback we’ve received from our runners our moving of the start and finish line to Snow Park was extremely popular. We plan on growing this event year-by-year and Snow Park will be able to accommodate the bigger celebrations ahead,” said Gene Brtalik, Race Director.

Online registration for the 2013 Oakland Running Festival will open in June. Next year ORF will take place on Sunday, March 24th throughout the diverse neighborhoods of Oakland.
