Oakland, Calif.- Nov. 15, 2010 - Several of Oakland's restaurants have been recognized for their quality and taste in the 2011 Bib Gourmand picks, included in the Michelin Guide. The recognition is given to restaurants who have demonstrated notably good deals, which may include two courses and a glass of wine for $40.

Those included on the guide have not received a Michelin Star, but are considered to be runners-up in comparison. The full list of Bay Area restaurants includes 74 in the area, eight of which are located in Oakland. Oakland's contributors include Bay Wolf, Bellanico, Brown Sugar Kitchen, Camino, Chu, Hibiscus, Pican, and Wood Tavern.

Oakland's Commis has been able to surpass the list, becoming Oakland's first and currently the East Bay's only restaurant with a Michelin Star. The deciding factors for a restaurant to earn a Michelin Star are not set in stone - there is no written criteria and the process is somewhat complex. Usually, the award is based on the culinary skills of the chef, excellence in food and in service. With more and more celebrated chefs opening restaurants in the area, look out for additional Michelin Stars in Oakland's future.
