Oakland, Calif. – Sept. 27, 2010 - The topsail ketch Hawaiian Chieftain will open its 2010-2011 California sailing season with a visit to Jack London Square on Oakland’s historic waterfront Oct. 8-10. The tall ship is scheduled to arrive in Oakland during the evening of Friday, Oct. 8 after a six-day passage from its home port of Grays Harbor, Wash. The ship is chartered by a private party on Saturday, Oct. 9, and it will open for public tours on Sunday, Oct. 10 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The crew will be dressed in period costume. A $3 donation per person is appreciated.
At 2 p.m. Oct. 10, the Hawaiian Chieftain will welcome guests for a three-hour Adventure Sail, which features demonstrations of tall ship handling, a sea shanty, and an opportunity for guests to help sail a real tall ship. The Hawaiian Chieftain is also inviting guests on a three-hour, one-way Passage from Oakland’s Jack London Square to Pier 40 on San Francisco’s waterfront Monday, Oct 11. Tickets are $67.50 and may be purchased online at www.historicalseaport.org or by calling 800-200-5239. The vessel departs at 9 a.m.
After a brief stay in San Francisco, Hawaiian Chieftain will depart for a two-month stay in Sacramento, where it will offer educational programs for K-12 school and home-school groups, as well as youth service groups and seniors. Hawaiian Chieftain is scheduled to visit 11 California ports from Oct. 8 through March 31, 2011. The ship will return to Oakland for a three-week stay in February, 2011.
Built in 1988 in Hawaii, the two-masted, steel-hulled Hawaiian Chieftain is a replica of a typical early 19th South Seas trading vessel. The vessel is 103-feet, nine-inches long and 22 feet at the beam. Her main mast rises 75 feet off the water. She is a frequent companion to the brig Lady Washington, which will be in transit to San Francisco during Hawaiian Chieftain’s Oakland visit.
