Oakland Offers Year Round Fairs and Festivals

Updated 2010

Oakland's booming cuisine and arts scene isn't just taking place in its new restaurants and galleries. New chefs and artists are also sharing their talents on the streets during Oakland's many fairs and festivals that take place throughout the city, throughout the year. Here are just a few to look out for:

* Eat Real Festival - The country’s first celebration of street food made with sustainably produced products, returns to Jack London Square August 28-30, 2010. Featuring the best of the Bay’s taco trucks, ice cream vendors, and the finest beers of Northern California, the mostly free three-day event will again put eaters in contact with the real people in the Bay Area -- the farmers, chefs, and producers -- who make our food. Events will raise money for and awareness of food accessibility and farmland issues. The inaugural event in 2009 some 50,000 people, making it one of the largest food-focused events in California. For more information, visit www.eatrealfest.com.

* Art & Soul Oakland – Big names headline the four stages at Oakland’s premier urban music and art event of the year – Art & Soul. Each year it features touring national recording artists in Rock and smooth Jazz, plus a stage of Gospel presented by the Edwin Hawkins and the Community of Unity, Blues presented by The Bay Area Blues Society, Latin presented by Caribelinq, World Dance presented by Dance-A-Vision Entertainment, a kids’ stage and much more. Art stalls feature a wide range of handmade items. August 14-15, 2010 12 noon to 6pm. For more information, visit www.artandsouloakland.org.

* Oakland Chinatown StreetFest – In late August, the Chinatown StreetFest attracts thousands of people from all over the Bay Area to come savor the taste of Asia, and to experience the traditions that Oakland's Chinatown has so diligently preserved. The event is one of the largest Asian festivals in the United States. The two-day event runs from 10AM to 6PM and is free to the public. Consisting of more than 200 booths, the festival will span nine to ten blocks of Chinatown. Every year small businesses and community organizations from all over California come to showcase a myriad of delicious foods, unique Asian products, and special services. There will be arts & crafts, entertainment on three stages, and a Cultural Village presented by the the Oakland Asian Cultural Center and Museum of Children's Art.

* Neighborhood Street Fairs – Visitors are always welcome at Oakland’s many neighborhood street fairs that feature local food, art and lively entertainment. Montclair Village hosts two: the Sidewalk Fine Arts Festival June 25-27, 2010 and Sidewalk Arts and Crafts Festival is October 2-3. Some of the other neighborhoods hosting events include Lake Merritt http://www.oaklandlakefest.com, Temescal www.temescaldistrict.org/events.html, Rockridge www.rockridgedistrict.com and the Laurel District www.laureldistrictassociation.org
