Oakland, California
Oakland’s scenic Jack London Square boasts dramatic views of the San Francisco Bay, waterfront shopping and dining and world-class entertainment and attractions. Visitors to this exciting destination can also enjoy one of hundreds of special events hosted at the Square, from weekly Farmer’s Markets featuring the bounties of Northern California, to special holiday celebrations such as the annual Lighted Yacht Parade, and free concerts by both local and national artists.
Jack London Square, named for the famous author who was also one of the City of Oakland’s most renowned native sons, was developed in 1989 along the city’s waterfront by the Port of Oakland. In its 13-year history, it has become established as one of the Bay Area’s most popular and certainly most scenic and entertainment destinations.
Jack London Square features 10 dining establishments, several retail shops, a 9-screen cinema, overnight accommodations and a variety of unique waterfront attractions. The myriad of leisure options at Jack London Square is appropriate for all types of guests, whether they are searching for a great family destination or a romantic getaway. Guests will find exciting activities through the day and into the night at the Square, from taking a Venetian-style gondola ride on the Bay, to shopping at Barnes&Noble and other specialty shops, to enjoying world-class jazz performances and Japanese cuisine at Yoshi’s Jazz Club.
For those interested in Oakland’s past, a self-guided walking tour features highlights of the Square’s rich history. Visitors follow bronze “wolf tracks” through the Square, each recognizing a significant historical event or development. The trail leads to a final and important landmark … the permanently docked “Potomac”; President Franklin Roosevelt’s “floating White House”, which is now a museum.
The Square is located near Oakland’s revitalized downtown district and is easily accessible by bus and BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit). Jack London Square also offers underground, aboveground and valet parking. An Amtrak station is located adjacent to the Square.
